About San Diego
The present day city of San Diego has been inhabited for nearly 10,000 years. The area was originally settled by the Kumeyaay people until the Portuguese discovered the bay in the 16th century. In the next several hundred years the area was settled by Portuguese, Spanish and eventually Americans. The city was originally centered at the foot of Presido Hill, which is now called Old Town. Eventually the city center moved to present day downtown due to it's proximity to the bay, a location which helped make San Diego one of the most important ports on the West Coast of the United States. Present day San Diego is an exciting metropolitan area with great attractions, exciting nightlife, gorgeous geography and spectacular beaches. The city is also one of the biggest homes of the U.S. Navy, with several bases in the metro area.
